Infusing resins
Resins generally either dissolve in oil or the oil-soluble ingredients are extracted into the oil. The kind of resin you have will determine how long it needs in the double-boiler. If it dissolves nearly straight away, take it out. If it doesnât, you might need to keep checking: a) the colour of the oil to see if it is changing and b) after carefully removing the lid with a tea-towel the smell. (But be quick so you donât let all the essential oils out! They will settle into the oil again later once it has cooled down.)
Common resins are frankincense and pine, which are especially good for pain salves. Keep in mind the sustainability and ethical issues around the farming of frankincense, as many species are becoming over-harvested. This is why I never use the essential oil. Essential oils need a crazy amount of plant matter to make and only extract the oils from the plant. Many of the other active constituents arenât drawn out of the resin/plant. This is not sustainable, especially as demand grows. The main actions are in the full resin, not just its essential oil component, so be aware of people making therapeutic claims for products that only contain essential oils dropped into a salve and where the rest of the plant constituents arenât in it. This is why itâs vitally important to have the necessary training if you are going to create a business and make therapeutic claims about your products. One last point to mention is that many plant constituents work synergistically together and when you extract or isolate one particular active constituent you might get side effects. However, if you have the full plant profile with the other constituents, side effects are less likely to occur.
